Dear Hope,
In 1933 Oliver M. Freeman of the National Arboretum made the first controlled cross between a red and silver maple. Since the Freeman Maple (aka Autumn Blaze) combines some of the best features of both parents, namely solid structure, attractive form and showy fall colors from the red maple; and adaptability and rapid growth from the silver maple, it was identified as the hybrid to be planted when Park Community Church and Bethel Baptist Church merged in 1999 to birth Hope. Twenty-five years later, our previously barren east lawn is a destination for photographers, videographers, astonished stroller pushers and awestruck stroller passengers. This fall 5 neighbors went out of their way to tell me how glorious, amazing, and captivating Hope’s parkway is. May the One who created photosynthesis, hydration, soil, annual cycles, grafting and crossbreeding be glorified in the ongoing, faithful, quiet, long-term, persevering work that He alone can do.
Love,
Dean
