“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21
The concept of having less has become a popular topic in our society. Many of us have a heart-level desire to not only live with less, but to change our ways of collecting and buying “things” that have proven to not make us happy. Whether it be minimalism, tiny-house living, or just the concept of “weeding out,” – our youtube, tv shows/documentaries, and general media have had a tremendous and recent focus on living with less.
The Bible has the above specific reference to this phenomena that speaks so clearly to the lack of peace of collecting material possessions, but also to the joy of where to focus the giving of both material possessions (including financial gifting) and time (volunteering, helping, etc).
We believe that true contentment comes from the “gathering” of treasures in heaven – sharing with others and with the church the gifts that God has given to you. Please reach out if you have questions on this shift in philosophy or if this resonates with you. Lead Pastor Dean Wertz would love to engage a conversation on the topic and guide you further in your journey of giving.
For those of you who have been giving already, we thank you for continuing to support Hope. If you are new to giving, please see the ways you can participate below. Any questions on giving or help with the specific methods listed can be directed to Hope’s Treasurer, Amy Griggs.
Thank you!
Why Give?
Giving is one of the habits we cultivate as we follow Jesus, are changed by Jesus, and join Jesus in His mission of love:
- It is acceptance of His invitation to follow Him and submit to His authority in every area of life.
- It is evidence that He is changing us to be more like Him in in how we think and what we do.
- It is partnership with Him in His mission to make disciples, baptize them and teach them.
- Giving empowers Hope to make disciples of Jesus in Denver and around the world by investing in our staff, missionaries, ministries and facilities.
- Giving generously, sacrificially, cheerfully and consistently brings glory to God and brings joy to us as we trust Him.
