How shall we endure suffering? Suffering is not a space that anyone is very comfortable with, however, the Apostle Peter shares how to exist in suffering while following the beautiful way of Jesus. As Peter writes to those he has concern for, he unveils a simple path of truths that we must make decisions to follow. When we do, we will continue to be blessed by our Father who is in Heaven.

Whether you grew up going to church, or found Jesus later in life, there are always moments we learn something about our faith that feels upsetting, difficult, and confusing. Scripture is not always immediately clear and there are passages and ideas that feel contradictory. In church we also hear many different voices and opinions from many different leaders – maybe even those who are trying to lead us astray. In short, as a Christian, it can be hard to know who to trust. We’re busy. There are so many things we have to do to keep our lives running. They were busy. There were so many things the people of Judah had to do restart their lives and keep them running when they returned from Babylon to Jerusalem. God knew it. He knew they were busy. He knew there were so many things they had to do. But he asked them to prioritize doing the things that would fulfill his redemptive mission and trust him to provide for them. When Joseph discovered that his betrothed wife, Mary, was with child, he quickly thought of two options. Later, in a more restful posture, God revealed a third way, God’s way. God is always willing to unveil His plan to those who resist the initial impulse to act without divine knowledge. How shall we respond when life doesn’t go according to our plan? While on earth Jesus was guided by the Holy Spirit in ways that were often unexpected. The Spirit led Jesus to be tempted by Satan in the wilderness and into Jerusalem to be crucified. The disciples were often confused by the mysterious steps the Spirit led Jesus to take. Now that Jesus has ascended and fulfilled His promise to send the Holy Spirit into His followers, we can also expect to be led in ways that are unexpected, unplanned, and confusing. In this message, we will be encouraged and guided to walk faithfully when seasons of mystery arise.
When the ancient people of God were in crisis, surrounded by their enemy that could kill and capture them and the sea that could crush and drown them, God saved them by creating a path and spurring them to walk in faith through it. When we, the people of God, are in crisis today, we can trust that the one who spurred the world into motion can spur us to act justly, mercifully, and humbly as we walk with him.
Woody Allen acknowledged, “I’m not afraid of death; I just don’t want to be there when it happens” and Solomon observed, “the fear of man will prove to be a snare.” What if our fears are actually opportunities for growth? In this message we grapple with the realities of fear and discover from an ancient story how to grow in freedom, trust and courage in the legitimate concerns of 2021 and beyond.
God promises incredible blessing to those who walk with him, but he doesn’t always bless us in the ways we expect him to. God continually used unexpected and even painful means to bless Abraham, yet Abraham continued to trust God. When a family member dies or another conduit of blessing is unexpectedly, painfully lost, will we, like Abraham, continue to trust God to keep his promises?
As we learned last week, Noah listened to God and did what God commanded. In the New Testament, we learn that Noah “became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.” How do we become heirs of that righteousness? And what are the implications to our world when we receive and live that righteousness?
