The subject of calling can be a confusing one. In common vernacular we talk about “finding our calling” and it mostly has to do with following our dreams. Many of us can feel a sense of angst if we haven’t “found” it. But if there’s a calling, then there is a caller. And if there is a caller, our part is listening attentively. Paul makes it clear that all believers share a common primary calling: to live all our life in response to the voice of God. Paul himself demonstrates this throughout the book of Acts. It’s a way of life, not the “what” of life. It’s a verb, not a noun. His intense conviction about his mission is preceded by being convicted. His pathway is not following his own dreams; it’s following his true shepherd-king, Jesus. Calling isn’t me finding myself; it’s God finding me.
